Swamped.

I’m completely swamped. I don’t know how else to put it. Every morning starts before the sun rises and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Most evenings go far later than I really like, but I also wouldn’t have it any other way. Combining the life of a gigging musician with being an ultra-runner is beginning to tax me, but unfortunately, I can’t live without either right now. It takes the trails, the sunrises, the runs with my friends and by myself to reset every day. I wake up and run down to the water, watch the waves crash, or climb up a mountainous trail and watch the city come alive below me and it puts me at peace. I am okay. I am refreshed. I am not only ready to take on the day ahead, but inspired to bring the best of me to everyone I encounter. Running makes me a better person.

And I need music like I need oxygen. If I’m not actively pursuing music on a daily basis, I feel strangled and frantic. If I didn’t have this as a forum to communicate, I might not ever have a chance of being understood.

The last few weeks I’ve been diving into both with probably too many goals, too many people to consider, too much to plan without risking my head exploding, but I think that’s the only way I know how to work, because this seems to be a continuing pattern in my life. In that case, my life is just extremely full right now. Yes. It’s bursting at the seams with fullness. :)

2 weeks after Twin Peaks 50 Miler, I headed to Baton Rouge where I played a show, did a product test for Thriv, and ran the New Orleans Marathon on behalf of Garmin to test their 450. The New Orleans was also a good chance for me to get some pavement miles in. American River is around the corner and the first 20 miles or so are on roads, which I haven’t been running much of.

The show in Baton Rouge went well. It only made me want to write more and play more. I never feel satisfied after a show. I find I’m always moving on to the next idea or next thing and the longer it takes me to take action, the more anxious I get.

I ran New Orleans at a good, relaxed but strong pace, finishing in 3:49. The course was different this year now that it’s a Rock and Roll Marathon and it was much more enjoyable than it’s been the last 2 years.

After getting back to Los Angeles I played a show at Molly Malones which was a lot of fun! I loved the venue, I thought the sound guy was fantastic, and we had a great showing, especially for a Monday night.

I also decided last minute to race in the Malibu Creek 25k. I was originally planning to do the 50k but decided to drop down to the 25k after deciding on doing the L.A. Marathon as well. This ended up being a wise choice. Malibu Creek was not my finest performance. I was able to put out a good effort and finish 2nd in my age group, but I was bonking hard, not able to take in nutrition without my stomach doing flips, my hydration was wacky, and I was overall ready to be finished when I came into the 25k mark.

Last week I had a show with Nina Storey at Hotel Cafe. The day before the show, Brig Van Osten from Bravo’s show Shear Genius offered to style me! I happily said yes, as I’ve never been styled in my life, and it was so much fun! Brig is so creative! I felt like a rock star/super model.

Rowr!

This past weekend I ran in the L.A. Marathon. I actually didn’t mind it too much. The course was pretty fun and I had my own memories on almost every mile, which was pretty cool. I ran it in a relaxed and happy 3:52. 2nd Marathon this month and recovery was nada. This boosts my confidence quite a bit for American River. It’s my 4th race in the past 5 weeks and I’m feeling like all of this racing is great rehearsal for American River.

My current running shoes. Kind of embarrassing....

I’m making an attempt to have an entire CD finished before the Summer and just this goal lingering above me makes me feel like I’m standing on a hot stove. Goal for the week – finish scratch cuts of all of the songs I think I might want to record. Also goal for the week – don’t pass out during rehearsals.

Running with the Garmin 405 showed me that I have no idea how to pace myself in a marathon. Granted, it’s the first marathon I’ve run in a year since I’ve only been racing ultras lately, but I think I hit a mental wall at about mile 16 and ended up finishing with fuel left to burn. It was a good workout and a beautiful course though and I had fun playing with the watch. Next up – L.A. in 2.5 weeks.
